Advice Column Question & Answer

Subject: HPV and Herpes

QUESTION:

Hi, I understand that you are not a doctor and are limited to your advice. I was wondering if Herpes and HPV comes from the same strain of virus and are they both linked to cervical cancer. If you have any websites that would be helpful that would be great. I have HSV-2 and have only had one outbreak in the whole year since I found out that I had herpes. I do know that Genital Warts are caused by the virus of HPV. Thanks.

REPLY:

No, HPV and Herpes are completely unrelated viruses. HPV is the culprit in regards to cervical cancer, and there are only specific strains of HPV that are implicated. There are over 100 strains of HPV, and most of them appear to be relatively benign. Herpes is from a different viral family, which also includes chicken pox. As far as is known, it has no bearing on cervical cancer. The best site for all this info is www.cdc.gov.
