Advice Column Question & Answer

Subject: HPV Diagnosis

QUESTION:

I just was told I have an "abnormal high-grade displaysia" from my doctor. It was ironic because I was getting a referral to get the HPV vaccine shot. Anyways, I was wondering if the colposcopy comes back with a diagnosis of HPV, can I still take the shot to reduce it? I understand that the HPV will just treat itself in most cases, but after the infection goes away, am I still able to get the shot?

REPLY:

It is not yet known why, but some people are able to "clear" HPV from their system. Others do not. I would definitely ask this question of your doctor, but my guess is that you could still take the HPV vaccine because it protects you against more than one strain of the bacteria. It addresses 4 strains that accounts for 70% of the HPV that seems to lead to cervical cancer. But ask your doctor to be sure.
