Subject: Chances of PregnancyQUESTION: Hopefully you can help me find some peace of mind. I had intercourse last night with my bf (unprotected as we are both tested on a regular basis) and usually he pulls out but we just got caught up in the moment and he came inside of me. I'm wondering, what are the chances of pregnancy if I just finished my period two days prior? From what I've been able to research, chances should be pretty low as most women are the most fertile 12-16 days before their period. Is this correct? REPLY: Ack. Unless your are long-term monogamous partners who are frequently tested and what is called "fluid bonded", no condom or any protection is no protection against STDs as well as pregnancy. Unless you are planning on having children, why take this risk at all? In regards to your question, *no* time of the month for a woman is 100% 'safe'. Most women, though not all, ovulate about two weeks before their period and then two weeks after their period. So generally speaking, the less likely times of pregnancy are right before and right after a woman's period. But again, never 100% and not all women ovulate on this 2 week cycle anyway, so you can't be sure. Sperm can live up to 4-5 days inside of a woman, and a woman's egg can live 24-48 hours. So...depending when you have sex, it may not always be so easy to determine when the 'less likely' days are. That's why the rhythm method has its very low success rate of preventing pregnancy. Plan B, also known as the morning after pill, can be taken up to 120 hours after having unprotected sex. It does not protect against STDs, but it is effective at preventing pregnancy. But I encourage you to begin using protection in the future. - KT . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .
