Advice Column Question & Answer

Subject: Herpes and Blow Jobs

QUESTION:

Can you get herpes from giving a guy a bj when there is no sign of sores?

REPLY:

There are two strains of Herpes -- HSV1 and HSV2. If you give oral sex to a guy with genital herpes (HSV2) you are less likely to get infected orally because it's not the site of preference. But there is always the possibility of asymptomatic skin shedding. If you have genital contact with him, then you are much more likely to get infected. The best course of action is to assume you CAN get it and protect yourself accordingly.
