Advice Column Question & Answer

Subject: HPV Vaccinations

QUESTION:

I have had HPV in the past and I am currently with a new partner. Before we had sex for the first time I went to get my annual pap smear and was told it was normal. I questioned the nurse and she said that HPV can go away on its own. Though I am clear now is there still away I can infect my partner? I also heard about the HPV vacination on the news. Is there a good website I can go to that will explain the vaccine. And how do I know if I would be a good candidate for the vacinne?

REPLY:

Yes, HPV does clear the system on some people. It is not known why this happens, so you are lucky. I think the jury is still out on whether you could be contagious or not, so I guess the ethical thing to do is tell new partners that you used to have HPV but that it has cleared your system. You can ask your doctor about that. The CDC has excellent info on the vaccine at this url: http://www.cdc.gov/std/hpv/STDFact-HPV-vaccine.htm
