Subject: Yeast InfectionQUESTION: I have a yeast infection. I've been taking antibiotics - would that be the cause of my yeast infection? Can developing a tolerance to antibiotics make the problem worse? REPLY: Taking antibiotics can lead to yeast infections. The vagina has a delicate balance between the resident yeast and bacteria. Taking antibiotics kills the bacteria, which results in an increase in the amount of yeast - because the yeast no longer have competition for obtaining nutrients, space, etc. As far as taking the antibiotics regularly, and bacteria developing a tolerance, this would NOT lead to yeast infections. Developing a tolerance to the antibiotics means that the bacterial levels are unaffected, and there are plenty of bacteria left in the vagina to keep the yeast levels in check. - KT . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .
