Advice Column Question & Answer

Subject: Female Condoms

QUESTION:

I was going to buy those Elexa condoms and when I read the back of the box to see if they were the female condoms I have heard about. I must've either didn't read it all the way or I got sidetracked and confused b/c I read about the male condom and there was a picture of it on the back of the box. I thought there would be directions and a picture of what it looked like when you take it out of the box. I ended up not buying b/c of this and I'm wondering if Elexa had actual female condoms at all. I'm also wondering if you put on lube before, during, or after you put it on.

REPLY:

Elexa, from what I can tell, is just a line of regular condoms for men by Trojan, but the marketing is aimed at women.

An example of a female condom would be the FC Female Condoms from Mayer Labs (http://www.mayerlabs.com/consumer/products/fcfemalecondom.asp). The FC condom is pre-lubricated, I believe, but you can always add more if you need to.
